Script - Fu The Gimps Wonder Weapon

The GIMP is an Open Source Photo Editing Program similar to Photoshop. It is a really great Free program that has some really amazing features that are not always apparent to the newcomer.

One of these features is the Ability to create Logos using Automated Scripts called Script-Fu.

The first thing you need to do is to download a copy of The GIMP you can do this Here. After you have installed the program all you need to do is start it up. From the main menu in the center panel choose Create > Logos > Cool Metal. You will see the Script-Fu dialog box as in the picture above. In this Dialog you can choose the Size, The Type Face (Font) and the type of Gradient you wish to use as a fill for the text. All you have to do then is to click the OK button and The GIMP will do the rest and create the Image you can see at the head of this article.

It is great using some of the Free Type Faces available on The Web like Addams Capitals. If you want to know where to find these Fonts and Install them you can read my Hub on Installing and Downloading Fonts.

There is a huge choice of different Logo Scripts, each one with the ability to change Type Faces and Colors. This gives you a truly amazing variety of possibilities.

The other great feature about Script-Fu is that during the same session of The GIMP every time you open a Script-Fu dialog box it remembers your last setting. This enables you to create a whole lot of headings with the same special effects which is brilliant for designing Web Pages.

To save the file as a jpeg file you will have to flatten the Image first because it is made up of several Layers. You do this by choosing Image > Flatten Image from the main menu. You can then save the file. (Don't forget to select or type the jpeg extension in when you save the file).

If you save the file as a .png file, don't flatten the image first, just save the file as a .png file and follow the prompts. This way you will retain a transparent background on the Logo.

How simple is That? If you want to learn more about The GIMP I have a Free Web site with lots of Tutorials.

Cheers and have lots of Fun creating Logos.
